Cellars are likely to suffer from damp issues. There are 2 types of systems that are available for damp proofing cellars. Both must adhere to BS8102:2009 which is the code of practice for the protection of below ground structures against water from the ground.
Cementitious Waterproofing:
This is where a cementitious slurry is applied to the walls and the floors to stop any water entering the cellar.
Cavity Drainage System:
This consists of plastic membranes being installed in the walls and floors and a drainage channel is installed around the perimeter of the chamber that leads to a sump where the water is pumped out of the cellar.
Lowering the Cellar Floor
Insufficient headroom in your cellar? It is sometimes possible to lower the cellar floor. As experienced basement conversion specialists, we carry out all the necessary inspections alongside Building Control before any work has commenced.
Fire Regulations
The cellar will need to be provided with suitable escape routes in case of a fire. A mains operated smoke detection system will need to be installed. Fire doors and frames will be required to seal the cellar either at the top or the bottom of the stairs.
The Ceiling, Walls & Floors
Walls and ceilings will be plasterboard and skimmed for the perfect finish ready for decoration. Ceilings need to offer 1 hour fire protection. The floors will be finished with 18mm moisture resistant boards allowing you to choose whatever overlay you require.
Heating
The most effective way of basement heating installation is to extend the existing central heating system. Our heating engineers will ensure your existing boiler has sufficient capacity to accept any additional radiators. All new radiators will be fitted with thermostatic valves to control the room temperature.
Ventilation
Where natural ventilation is not practical a mechanical ventilation system will need to be installed.
Thermal Insulation
The walls and floor of your cellar will be lined with insulating boards and the windows will include 24mm double glazing units.
Electrics
You are likely to require some electrical alterations as part of your conversion. We ensure that our electricians are able to issue you with BS7671 test certificates when they have completed their installation as these will be required before your Building Regulations Completion Certificate can be issued.
